An Ohio motor vehicle bill of sale is a legal document providing proof of the legal purchase of a motor vehicle in the State of Ohio. This form includes important information regarding the buyer, the seller, the vehicle, and the change of ownership. It is often required at the time of registration as proof of ownership.

Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form BMV-3724) – This form is required if the vehicle is less than sixteen thousand (16,000) pounds or less than ten (10) years old.

Registering a Vehicle

Vehicle owners must register their vehicle within thirty (30) days of purchase. Registration in Ohio can last anywhere from one to five years.[1] Owners can renew their registration online at OPLATES.com or in person at their local deputy registrar license agency.

Owners can register their vehicles in person at their local deputy registrar license agency.

Required Documents 

  • Bill of Sale;
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form BMW-3724);
  • Certificate of Title (duplicate titles[2] can be applied for at the local deputy registrar license agency);
  • Valid driver’s license;
  • Ohio Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney is required if the owner appoints another person to register the vehicle for them;
  • Registration Fees; and
  • Proof of Insurance with Minimum Requirements:[3]
    • $25,000 for the injury or death of one person (per accident);
    • $50,000 for the injury or death of two or more people (per accident); and
    • $25,000 for property damage (per accident).
