Michigan Firearm Bill of Sale Form

A Michigan firearm bill of sale is a document that proves the sale and purchase of a firearm occurred in Michigan in accordance with all appropriate federal and state laws. The form includes all descriptions and identifiers regarding the firearm, the buyer, and the seller. It also can serve as proof of a change of ownership. It requires the signatures of the buyer, seller, two witnesses, and the stamp of a public notary.

Privately Selling a Firearm

Anyone who can legally own a firearm in Michigan can also privately sell a firearm in the state.

Prohibited from Buying

A person is prohibited from owning or buying a firearm if:[1]

  • The person is under indictment for a felony. As used in this subdivision, “felony” means a violation of a law of this state, or of another state, or of the United States that is punishable by imprisonment for 4 years or more.
  • The person is prohibited from possessing, using, transporting, selling, purchasing, carrying, shipping, receiving or distributing a firearm.[2]

Registering a Firearm

Any person who buys a firearm is required to send a copy of the firearm bill of sale provided by the seller to their local police or sheriff’s department.[3]

Concealed Carry

A Concealed Pistol License is required for any person to carry a concealed weapon in Michigan.

How to Apply

Applicants for a Concealed Pistol License must be at least twenty-one years old.

Step 1 – Complete a Concealed Pistol License Application.

Step 2 – Attach evidence that the applicant has completed an approved firearm safety training course.

Step 3 – Attach a color passport-style photograph of the applicant if one isn’t already on file with the state.

Step 4 – File with the county clerk in which the applicant is a resident.

Step 5 – Pay the $100 filing fee.[4]

Step 6 – Submit fingerprints through any department or agency that provides fingerprinting services.

Step 7 – The county clerk will issue or deny the license within forty-five (45) days of receiving the applicant’s fingerprints.[5]

Reciprocity

Michigan will recognize the concealed carry permit of any state, as long as the carrier follows all Michigan state laws regarding firearms and concealed carry.[6]
