Registering a Boat

All boats owned by Vermont residents must be registered with the state Department of Motor Vehicles to operate on Vermont waters. (Visitors to the state are exempt from registration so long as they remain in the state no longer than ninety (90) consecutive days.) Vermont law does not specify how soon a buyer must register a boat after purchasing it, but the best practice is to do so as soon as possible. Boats may be registered for one or two years. Owners will receive a postcard reminder to renew by mail when registration is pending.

Where to Register

Registration may be completed in person at any of the Vermont DMV locations.
