A Montana bill of sale allows a buyer to create a legal document to purchase personal property, commonly a motor vehicle. It should include the parties’ information, property description, and purchase price.
If for a motor vehicle, the buyer will need a signed copy and the certificate of title to register with the state of Montana (MVD).

Vehicle Registration Forms
- Bill of Sale;
- Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form MV90-A);
- Application for Certificate of Title of a Motor Vehicle (Form MV1-16) (if the owner needs a new title, apply in-person at the county treasurer’s office);
- Application for Replacement Certificate of Title (Form MV7) (if the owner needs a replacement title, mail application to the Vehicle Services Bureau);
- Valid driver’s license;
- Montana Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney must be included if the owner designates another individual to register the vehicle on their behalf;
- Registration Fees; and
- Proof of Insurance with Minimum Requirements:
- $20,000 because of injury to or destruction of property of others (one accident);
- $25,000 because of bodily injury to or death of one person (one accident); and
- $50,000 because of bodily injury to or death of two or more persons (one accident).
Boat Registration Forms
- Application for Certificate of Title;
- Bill of Sale;
- Certificate of Title; and
- Registration Fees (based on length and age of watercraft).
